For adults who care about long-term physical capability, strength training has become widely accepted. That is a meaningful improvement from the older model of aging, in which exercise advice was often reduced to walking, stretching, and simply staying active.

But strength is only part of the equation.

The ability to produce force matters. The ability to produce it quickly matters too. In exercise physiology, that second quality is generally described as muscular power, and its practical value extends beyond athletic performance.

Getting out of a chair requires strength. Rising quickly from a low position requires power. Carrying luggage requires strength. Catching yourself when the suitcase shifts unexpectedly requires power. A controlled tennis groundstroke uses strength, coordination, and timing. Reacting to a short ball, accelerating forward, stopping, and changing direction asks those same qualities to be expressed much faster.

Strength and power are related, not interchangeable

Power is often described simply as force produced quickly. That definition is useful because it explains why a person can be strong enough to complete a movement slowly, yet still have difficulty responding when time is limited.

Many sensible training programs for adults in their 40s, 50s, and 60s become increasingly controlled as the years pass. Loads may remain challenging, but repetitions become slower, movement becomes more predictable, and anything resembling speed gradually disappears from the program.

That approach can preserve strength while leaving another important physical quality largely undertrained. It is not an argument against controlled lifting. Good technique, joint tolerance, and sufficient strength remain essential. It is an argument for recognizing that different qualities require different training signals.

A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis of resistance training in adults age 60 and older found improvements in muscle mass, strength, and functional performance overall. It also found that intended movement velocity mattered: training with maximal intended velocity was associated with larger improvements in functional performance, while slower resistance work appeared more favorable for some strength and muscle-mass outcomes. The practical conclusion is not that every repetition should become explosive. It is that training only one quality leaves other qualities less prepared.

Build the base before adding speed

The first task is to build sufficient strength. For someone who cannot control a squat or hinge, stabilize the trunk, move comfortably through a useful range of motion, or tolerate resistance consistently, adding speed is premature. Movement quality, strength, joint tolerance, and familiarity with an exercise come first.

Once that base exists, speed can be introduced selectively. The exercise itself matters less than the principle: the nervous and muscular systems occasionally need to practice producing force with urgency while movement remains controlled.

Use the right entry point. For one person, that may be standing from a bench with deliberate acceleration. For another, it may be a medicine-ball rotational throw, a light kettlebell movement, a short acceleration drill, or a faster concentric phase on a familiar resistance exercise.

Keep the dose modest. There is no need to create a separate power day or turn a limited weekly schedule into an athletic-development program. Two or three well-selected movements, performed with enough rest to preserve quality, can fit within a conventional strength session.

Stop before speed disappears. Power work becomes less useful when it is treated as conditioning. Once movement speed has deteriorated substantially, the intended quality is no longer being trained particularly well. The objective is not to accumulate exhaustion. It is to practice producing force quickly with control.

Why this matters outside the gym

Tennis makes the distinction easy to see. A player may retain good general strength and still lose effectiveness if the first step becomes slower, lateral recovery deteriorates, or the ability to decelerate and reaccelerate declines. Those qualities are not trained particularly well by performing every strength exercise at the same deliberate tempo.

The same point applies outside sport. Real life is not performed at a fixed tempo. A missed stair, an unexpectedly heavy door, a quick change of direction on uneven ground, lifting something before it falls, or moving rapidly when circumstances demand it all require force to be produced within a limited amount of time.

The American College of Sports Medicine includes appropriately progressed jumping, medicine-ball work, dumbbell and kettlebell movements, and other faster exercises among its examples for developing power in older adults. Its guidance is equally clear about progression: the right option depends on the person’s fitness level, abilities, and readiness. A qualified professional can help select and progress movements safely.

Capacity and expression

The evidence argues against a false choice between heavier training and faster training. Higher-intensity resistance work can be valuable for building lower-body strength. A 2026 meta-analysis of 18 randomized trials in adults age 50 and older found greater lower-body strength improvements with higher-intensity resistance training than with lower-to-moderate intensity approaches. That does not make heavier training automatic or appropriate for every person. It reinforces the need to match the training stimulus to the quality a person needs to develop.

A useful longevity program needs both capacity and expression. Strength gives the body options. Power helps make those options available in time.

For some clients, the immediate priority will still be basic strength. For others, mobility or aerobic conditioning will be the larger limitation. A former athlete returning to structured training may need something different from an executive who has exercised inconsistently for a decade.

The point is not that everyone over 40 needs to jump, sprint, or train explosively. The point is that moving slowly should not become the default definition of training intelligently with age.

The long-term objective
